Susan Henderson-Utis is a candidate for reelection to the Rose Tree Media School Board. Susan was first elected in 2017 and appointed president in 2020 and 2021. Susan is an educator, with experience as a public service attorney, mediator, and child advocate. She has spent most of her career working for the economically disadvantaged. Her volunteer service includes the Advisory Council of CASA Youth Advocates of Delaware County, Philadelphia READS, chair of the Media Aid Youth Panel, the Friends of Delaware County Women’s Commission, and the Delaware County Women’s Commission. Susan served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children and has presided over her homeowners association.
Susan has a bachelor’s degree in international studies and political science from American University, a master’s degree in education from Villanova University, and a law degree from Howard University. Early in her career, she worked for the Chester Housing Authority and, later, mediated and conducted conflict resolution training with the Center for Resolutions and represented indigent clients before the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas.
Susan is an 11-year resident of Middletown Township, where she lives with her husband, Andrey, and their two children. As a teacher and parent, she has seen the enormous impact a good school district can have on its community. Susan is committed to continuing to work on behalf of Rose Tree Media School District residents. Under Susan’s leadership, the school board created committees for equity, social and emotional learning, and a new elementary school was approved in a neglected area of the district. Susan demonstrated fiscal responsibility by conducting a clean audit and in retaining teachers and quality programming during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, she established a transparent, professional recruiting process and appointed a qualified board member replacement, thus placing education requirements over political party affiliation.
Susan describes herself as an excellent networker whose vision includes ensuring that every child in the district has access to a quality education, regardless of income, and that each child can reach their educational potential. She is committed to working with teachers, so they remain dedicated and motivated to stay in her school district.
