Rose Tree Media School Board incumbent Susan Henderson-Utis was first elected in 2017, and appointed board president in 2020 and 2021. Susan is a certified high school social studies teacher and has her Master's in Education from Villanova University. She also earned her Juris Doctorate from Howard University and is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Reflecting her commitment to helping children and families, she currently serves on the Advisory Council of CASA Youth Advocates of Delaware County, and previously chaired the Media Youth Aid Panel and volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children.


Susan lives with her husband, Andrey, and their two children, both of whom attend Indian Lane Elementary School.

Susan is proud of the following accomplishments as Rose Tree Media School Director:

  • Overseeing the creation of ad hoc committees for equity, and social and emotional learning

  • Establishing a transparent selection process for hiring a superintendent

  • Initiating the building of a new elementary school

  • Demonstrating a commitment to fiscal responsibility (as shown by a clean audit even during the height of a pandemic)

  • Always putting education and district needs first (as exhibited by recruiting a qualified board member of a different political party to complete a departing board member's term)

  • Retaining teachers and quality programming during the pandemic

Susan Henderson-Utis is a candidate for reelection to the Rose Tree Media School Board. Susan was first elected in 2017 and appointed president in 2020 and 2021. Susan is an educator, with experience as a public service attorney, mediator, and child advocate. She has spent most of her career working for the economically disadvantaged. Her volunteer service includes the Advisory Council of CASA Youth Advocates of Delaware County, Philadelphia READS, chair of the Media Aid Youth Panel, the Friends of Delaware County Women’s Commission, and the Delaware County Women’s Commission. Susan served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children and has presided over her homeowners association.


Susan has a bachelor’s degree in international studies and political science from American University, a master’s degree in education from Villanova University, and a law degree from Howard University. Early in her career, she worked for the Chester Housing Authority and, later, mediated and conducted conflict resolution training with the Center for Resolutions and represented indigent clients before the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas.


Susan is an 11-year resident of Middletown Township, where she lives with her husband, Andrey, and their two children. As a teacher and parent, she has seen the enormous impact a good school district can have on its community. Susan is committed to continuing to work on behalf of Rose Tree Media School District residents. Under Susan’s leadership, the school board created committees for equity, social and emotional learning, and a new elementary school was approved in a neglected area of the district. Susan demonstrated fiscal responsibility by conducting a clean audit and in retaining teachers and quality programming during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, she established a transparent, professional recruiting process and appointed a qualified board member replacement, thus placing education requirements over political party affiliation.


Susan describes herself as an excellent networker whose vision includes ensuring that every child in the district has access to a quality education, regardless of income, and that each child can reach their educational potential. She is committed to working with teachers, so they remain dedicated and motivated to stay in her school district.
