Dr. Laura Detre is running for School Director in Region 3 of the West Chester Area School District to ensure better collaboration between our school district, educators, and community. Laura is a PhD and West Chester University adjunct professor with nearly 25 years of first-hand classroom experience who knows what it takes to help all students reach their potential. She understands the many perspectives of our community given her many roles, not only just as an educator but also as a mother, taxpayer, and tireless neighborhood volunteer. With Laura’s leadership, all diverse voices in our community will be heard.
Laura understands the need for all students to have access to a high-quality education adapted to their needs, just as she did. She earned her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate in history, is a Fulbright scholar with language skills in German and French, and has published research in numerous academic journals. She knows robust services work for diverse student populations because of her learned experience. She also understands, as a taxpayer and community member herself, that all families need to know their opinions are important and that their voices are being heard—a notable shortcoming at this time that can and must be improved.
As School Director, Laura would ensure through better community forums and smarter use of social media that all families better understand how and why educational decisions are made. This improvement will also serve to provide district families with another means by which to contact and communicate with their elected representatives.
Laura’s proven record of service to the children of this community informs her rich understanding of the diversity of students and their families. She has volunteered in schools for many years, running the Westtown-Thornbury Elementary school store and mileage club as well as volunteering in both the Westtown-Thornbury and Stetson Middle School libraries. She is a volunteer for Art Goes to School, teaching art appreciation classes in local elementary schools. She has also been a Den Leader with Cub Scout Pack 66, a member of the committee for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 149, and cookie mom for Girl Scout Troop 4840. Additionally, she has served on both the School Safety and the Start Time committees in the district. As a proven public servant, Laura will apply her wealth of knowledge and experience, as well as her capacity for tireless dedication, as a School Director in the West Chester Area School District.
Laura and her husband, Joseph, have lived in West Goshen Township for many years. Their two children attend West Chester Area School District schools.
