Don Hurford is running to be one of three auditors in Thornbury Township. He is a human resources executive and a former West Chester Borough Councilman. Don believes Thornbury needs an independent-minded professional to double check the township’s business practices.
Don has more than 25 years’ experience as a human resources professional. He is currently vice president of human resources for the Parkway Corporation, a real estate development and operating company. He previously held the same and other management positions at several subdivisions of Catholic Health East, a healthcare organization. As a senior executive for these two large organizations, Don has been part of annual corporate audits; engaged with outside professional auditing teams; developed policies, procedures, and protocols as a response to audits; and worked closely with inside auditors and asset protection professionals. He has worked with corporate CEOs, presidents, board members, and every level of employee.
Don is experienced working at the local government level. From 1990 to 1994 he served as West Chester Borough Councilman. When elected as a member of the three-person Thornbury Audit Board, his goal is to improve the township’s performance. Thornbury Township currently has all Republican supervisors and auditors. Don believes one-party rule is not healthy and would like to change that. He will advocate for competent fiscal management and balanced oversight of the township manager and supervisors. In effect, he would be auditing the Audit Board’s work.
As a community volunteer, Don has been involved with United Way projects, worked with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and is an advisory board member of American Heritage Federal Credit Union.
Don is a lifelong fitness enthusiast, particularly enjoying running and cycling. He competes in local track and field events. He often leads bike rides for the West Chester Cycle Club on Saturday mornings from April through October. He is an active hiker throughout local and regional parks and trails.
Don is a member of several organizations: Greater Valley Forge Human Resources Association, Human Resources Executive Alliance, and the Society for Intercultural Education and Training.
Don was born in Philadelphia and raised in West Chester. He earned a master’s degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology and a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies from West Chester University. Don has been a Thornbury resident for 20 years. He lives in a beautifully restored late-1700s home with his wife, Dee, their daughter, and a standard poodle named Princess.
